As many might know, the Windham Zoning Commission is presenting its draft (final, perhaps) of the new Zoning Law to the Town Board. This will take place at the Town Hall in Hensonville, NY, at 4 pm on the 26th of June. I have grave concerns about the zoning law’s overuse of “rural residential” zoning in most of the town. This is clearly designed to create a community that is populated by larger homes. It is also a means to reduce overall housing density, which favors the creation of higher-end homes at the expense of affordable housing. Affordable housing was identified as a critically needed resource in our community in the Windham Comprehensive Plan of 2020.
I cannot see how any current Zoning Law draft that is even remotely based on the data found on the We Are Windham 2040 website will accomplish the goal of creating affordable housing. This current zoning law is a giveaway to large-scale property developers and private equity firms while selling out the Town’s future. Not to mention, this entire process has been deliberately kept as removed from the general population as possible. This fact alone should frighten you as well about the lack of transparency in this community.
I hope to see everyone at the meeting on June 26th, 2025.
